Stephen
Lipsett put in another super drive in his little Peugeot 106 to take
victory in the Final Round of the Mervyn Wedlock Plant Hire sponsored
Autocross Championship 2006. The victory also netted him the Junior
Championship Title for 2006 from his main rival Sam Moffett who could
only manage 12th overall and 3rd junior home in in the wet slippery
conditions. Kieran Mc Carra was putting in a mighty charge in his Honda
Civic and lead after the first run only to end up beached in the bog on
his last run but still managed to finish a superb 2nd overall.
Ballyhaise man Adrian Foley took his little Nova to 3rd overall and
Joseph Smith took 4th overall, the result enough to win him the Wedlock
Plant Hire Autocross Championship and the Overall Club Champion for the
year. Vincent Mc Aree was 5th in his Peugeot 106.
Overall Winner Stephen Lipsett.
Class 1 Winner Tommy Donlon. Class 2 Winner Adrian Foley. Class 3 Winner Kieran Mc Carra. Class 4 Winner Joseph Smith. Class 5 Winner Gareth Mc Cullagh.

Lipsett Licks them in Latton.
Stephen
Lipsett took his Peugeot 106 to a memorable victory in Latton in what
was probably the worst weather encountered for any event since the
Latton Track was opened. The wet windy and bitterly cold conditions
suited the the lesser powered cars. The usual top runners Sam Moffett
and Joseph Smith found it difficult going getting grip on the rain
soaked track ending the day well down the field in 17th and 19th place
respectively.
Stephen Lipsett set out his stall with a fastest
time on the first run with a 2.19.96 with Jim Mc Kenna second on a time
of 2.20.27 and Derek Lipsett third on 2.21.69.
The fastest man
on the second run was Stephen Wright with a time of 2.20.91 followed
by Stephen Lipsett on 2.22.29 who was revelling in the wet conditions
and the ever consistent Tommy Donlon was third fastest on 2.22.38.
With
the weather conditions getting worse as the day progressed the third
run was once again dominated by Stephen Lipsett knocking in another
fastest time on a 2.19.70 with Tommy Donlon setting a 2.21.15 good
enough to net him 2nd Place overall on the day and Stephen Wright
setting a time of 2.23.54 was sufficient to take him to his best ever
result in Latton a 3rd overall.
1st Overall Stephen Lipsett 2nd Overall Tommy Donlon. 3rd Overall Stephen Wright.
Class 1 was won by Tommy Donlon, Class 2 was won by Shane Mc Girr. Class 3 was won by Jim Mc Kenna. Class 4 was won by Derek Gurney. Class 5 was won by Derek Lipsett.
Joseph Smith currently leads both the Autocross Championship and Club Championship for 2006. In the Mervyn Wedlock Plant hire Autocross Championship 5 out of the 7 rounds count towards the Championship. In
the overall Club Championship, all Cavan Motor Club events for 2006
count, but as none of the main championship contenters have points from
either the Stages Rally or the Navigation Trials, the Overall Club
Champion will be decided by competitors total score from all the 7 Autocross
events.
In the Junior Championship with dropped scores taken
into consideration Sam Moffett and Stephen Lipsett are level on points
going into the final round.
So often in the past on the Skibereen Fastnet Rally Patrick Elliott has
come close to winning but never achieved it. That all changed on last Sunday
afternoon when Patrick and his co driver Paul Goodman brought their bright red
Quinn direct backed Subaru S10 WRC into the finish ramp over a minute ahead of
their closest challenger Michael Barrable. Dublin based Car Dealer Michael and
Aaron MacHale had a great battle over the final stages in their respective Ford
Focus WRC’s, Aaron setting a couple of fastest times and Barrable just held on
to the runner-up spot.
Cootehill native Willie Fannin and his co driver Mick Courtney won Group N in
their Impreza doing enough to take the category in the Championship while Alan
Ring finished 3rd in the GpN category but took the Patterson RallyNews Award
for the Dunlop Championship. Former Ford Works driver Phil Collins drove with
his usual flair to bring his heavily developed Mk2 Escort into 9th and best two
wheel drive ahead of Killarney’s Peter
Kelly also in a Millington engined Mk2 Escort.
Patrick Elliott commented at the finish “It was a tough rally; I’ve been
trying a long time to win here. I really enjoyed the day. We had a hell of a
battle earlier with Ray Breen, it’s a shame he went off the road. There was
good organization, the rally ran perfectly and I am sure I speak for all the
competitors in thanking the marshals for standing out in the rain all day”.
Aaron MacHale said. “We had a big race over the last few stages, a good oul battle
with Barrable; it was a different car with these different tyres on”. Michael
Barrable said. “A good run at the end, I enjoyed it. Nice to have Dermot
O’Gorman back co-driving.” Ray Breen, despite being well down the order, after
spending 8 minutes in a ditch, was right on the pace over the last few stages.
Thomas Carolan and Declan Smith take Class 9 win.
The Skibereen Fastnet Rally was the final round of the 2006 Dunlop National
Rally Championship and although many of the Championship classes were sorted
out before Sunday’s event, some remained to be finalized. One such class was
Class 9 for 1400cc engined cars and after 9 rallies Thomas Carolan and Declan
Smith in their Mk2 Escort were level on points with
Simon Evans and Barry Faul in their Mini Cooper. The Tierworker crew needed to
finish ahead of their Wicklow based opponents to take the class and after Evans
hit electrical trouble on the opening stages, they protected their lead to
finish 2 minutes clear of the recovering Evans.
Other Local Drivers to enjoy success in
this years National Rally Championship include Michael Conlon who won Class 10
for 1600cc cars, Ollie O’Rielly finished 2nd in Class 13 for 2 litre
16valve cars and Maurice Moffett won took victory in Class 14 for cars with
engines up to 2500cc.
Wham Bam Sam. Two in a row for Moffett.
Motorsport News by Gerry
Buckley.
Sam Moffett takes his Yamaha powered Buggy to another win at Hutt Cross.
On Sunday, last Sam
Moffett continued his winning streak with a 2.74 second win from series sponsor
Mervyn Wedlock. The Drumgoon driver was 1.71 seconds ahead of third placed
Stephen Lipsett. Sam Moffett posted the fastest time of the day on the second
timed run, using the full advantage of his lightweight R6 Buggy in addition to
a dry run ahead of torrential rain. The young Clontibret driver was fastest
again on run 3, as the track remained wet.
The opening advantage
went to Wedlock as Cavan Motor Club unveiled the final evolution of the Hutt
Cross track with additional asphalt areas and a new mid section. Stephen
Lipsett was fractionally slower inside the same second as all driver’s
complained of a lack of grip especially while turning into corners. Also inside
the 2.03 bracket was James Cassidy with eventual winner Sam Moffett making up
the top four all inside the same second after the first timed run.
On the Second Run
times improved as the surface dried out, it on this run that Sam Moffett
recorded the 1:58.85 time that secured the win for him on the day, his nearest
challenger Mervyn Wedlock was over 4 seconds adrift exposing the weight
difference between the little buggy and Wedlock’s long serving G4 Ford Escort.
The race for runner up spot on the second run was much closer as Trevor
Lancashire made his first visit to Hutt Cross since fitting a 2.4 Cosworth
engine to his Mk2 Escort, the Drum driver was only 0.71 seconds off Wedlock as
they shared the track.
Despite the heavy rain
on run two, the surface of the track still retained some grip and the later
runners in the smaller classes started to post some quick times. While Sam was
once again fastest, young Scott Winslow from Clogher was second fastest in his
Suzuki engined Nova on the the same second as Sam, multiple Autocross Champion
Ronnie Coulter was third fastest almost a second adrift of his young Tyrone
compatriot Winslow.
Amongst the Classes
Micheal Conlon scored another start to finish win in Class 1, while young
Stephen Wright followed the Mini home in second sharing the family Nova with
his Father David. Tommy Donlon survived the loss of second gear in his 106 to
come home third in Class 1. In Class 2 Scott Winslow combined fastest time on
the second and third runs to take victory from the similar car of initial class
leader Adrian Foley with Seamus Cooke third in his Mk2 Escort.
Class 3 was entirely
the domain of Stephen Lipsett as the young Fintona driver left all others in
his wake taking victory by 6 seconds and third overall in the little 106 Gti.
Aiden Wray made good his first visit to Hutt Cross with second in class in his
Civic while Tom Gardiner was some distance further back in his older model
Civic. Joseph Smith took the Class 4 win once again extending his perfect
record in 2006 with 5 wins from 5 starts. James Cassidy did keep the reigning
Champion honest with fastest time on the first run but finished 0.8 seconds
behind Joe. Peter Deery broke the Escort domination of Class 4 with third in
class on the day driving Tommy Smiths Nova.
Mervyn Wedlock took
Class 5 in the absence of Championship class leader Ollie O’Rielly with Ronnie
Coulter second in his Astra. Gerard McAleer made a return to Hutt Cross having
last appeared in February to take third in class in his Mk2 Escort. The Wedlock
Plant Hire Autocross Championship returns to Hutt Cross on November 19th
when reigning Champion Joseph Smith will be trying to extend his 4 point lead
in the series as he try’s to secure back to back titles.
Round 5 of the Wedlock Plant Hire Autocross Championship 2006 will take place on the 1st October.

Elliott Wins in Clare but Charlie Donnelly takes Dunlop Championship Title for 2006.
Motorsport News by Gerry Buckley
Patrick Elliott/Rory Kennedy Victorious in Clare.
Donnelly wins Dunlop National
Rally Championship.
Title rival, Elliott wins
Lynch Hotels Clare Rally.
Second
place on the Lynch Hotels Clare Rally secured the 2006 Dunlop National Rally
Championship for Derry driver, Charlie Donnelly (Toyota Corolla
WRC). With co-driver, Paddy Toner having already tied up the Noel Smith
Memorial Trophy as the top co-driver, Donnelly created a unique piece of
history as his brother, Eugene also claimed the Dunlop national title
with second place on the 2003 Clare event.
At the
finish of the nine stage Ennis based event, victory went to Patrick
Elliott/Rory Kennedy - they finished 39 seconds ahead of Donnelly/Toner. Aaron
MacHale/Eugene O'Donnell (Ford Focus WRC) took third place to secure a similar
position in the Dunlop series. The Group N category was won by Alan Ring/Adrian
Deasy (Subaru) and Mike Moloney/Marie Casey (Escort) were the top crew in the
rear wheel drive category.
Just
four of the top crews traversed the opening stage as Noel Redmond crashed his
Subaru and in the process, temporarily blocked the stage. Elliott headed the
time sheets, covering the 13.8-kilometer test, Drumcharley, four seconds ahead
of Dunlop title rival, Charlie Donnelly with Aaron MacHale a further ten
seconds behind in third place. The top trio remarked on the slippery nature of
the stage. Denis Cronin (Subaru WRC) made a poor start and was 37 seconds off
the lead pace. Redmond's Subaru took to the scenery on a downhill left hand bend.
Elliott
continued his good run, set fastest times on the other two stages of the loop,
and arrived at the service halt with a 30-second lead over Donnelly. Elliott
reckoned a good tyre choice was of great benefit while Donnelly lost over 20
seconds when he overshot and had to reverse his Toyota Corolla before he rejoined
the stage. Third placed Aaron MacHale (Ford Focus WRC) remarked that his tyre
choice was a little too conservative; he was 14 seconds adrift of Donnelly.
Former
triple champion, Niall Maguire (Subaru) had an untroubled run to fourth while
Jack Sleator occupied fifth in his Subaru WRC. Meanwhile, on S.S. 2,
David McNulty crashed his Subaru and also caused the stage to be interrupted.
Elsewhere, Sean Gallagher and Kevin Barrett shared sixth and another duo to
share a position were Group N rivals, Alan Ring and Willie Fannin.
Interestingly, with the stage interruptions, S.S. 3 transpired to be their
first real stage. The final place in the top ten went to Denis Cronin; he had a
disastrous three stages as his Subaru jumped out of sixth gear. Aside from Redmond
and NcNulty, Martin Doherty retired his Subaru with wheel damage.
On the
repeat loop, Donnelly, Elliott and MacHale each set a fastest stage time, the
former took two seconds out of Elliott on S.S. 4 but then lost five on S.S. 4
when his Toyota slid wide and visited the scenery for some few seconds. By SS. 6, he
trailed Elliott by 28 seconds. At service, he also confirmed that he had an
intermittent intercom difficulty.
Third
placed MacHale also had an intercom problem, however, his choice of tyres were
much better on this occasion. Niall Maguire had an untroubled run through the
loop to consolidate fourth - as Cronin, still with gear selection difficulties
moved up to fifth. Kevin Barrett in his new Subaru WRC was seven seconds adrift
of the Cork driver while Sean Gallagher in eighth
reckoned his car was down on power, he also discovered the anti-lag system was
turned off during the opening stages. Alan Ring (Subaru) moved clear of rival,
Willie Fannin when the latter punctured his Subaru after he cut a corner too
tightly.
Special
Stage 7 was cancelled and Elliott stretched his lead on the penultimate stage
and although he was quickest again on the final stage, he couldn't prevent
Donnelly annexing the title courtesy of second spot. MacHale took a comfortable
third to secure the same position in the Dunlop series. Former champion, Niall
Maguire finished fourth with the Subaru WRC's of Denis Cronin and Kevin Barrett
rounded off the top six. Ring took the showroom class and has regained then
initiative over inaugural champion, Willie Fannin, who finished fourth in the
class behind the top three of Ring, Martin and Kelleher. In the rear wheel
drive category, Mike Moloney was some 20 seconds ahead of Donegal's, Paul
Gallagher (Toyota Corolla). Thomas Carolan and Declan Smith were 2nd
in class 9 forcing the Tierworker crew to make the long trip to Skibereen for
the final round of the Dunlop National Championship at the end of October.
Sam Moffett stamped
his authority on Hutt Cross last Sunday by winning Monaghan Motor Club’s
Autocross by 7 seconds from his uncle Maurice with Mervyn Wedlock third in his
Escort G4. The event was run to assist Chris Rodgers who was paralysed in an
accident during the 2004 Monaghan Stages Rally, the Clerk of the Course for the
day was Double National Champion Niall Maguire, the proceeds on the 101 entries
received, and donations on the Gate will be presented to Chris and his family
in the near future.
Paul Hughes, Chris Rodgers and event Winner Sam Moffett.
On a day that saw one
of the largest displays of horsepower at Hutt Cross, Sam Moffett recorded
fastest time of the day on the second and third runs after Mervyn Wedlock led
the field after the first run. The only car to compete with Sam’s Buggy on the
second and third run was his father Robert’s Metro-Cosworth although he then
had to carry a 5% time penalty to compensate for 4-wheel drive.
Among the special
entries for the event was National Rally Championship leader Charlie Donnelly
double driving Maurice Moffett’s 290bhp Millington-engined Starlet, the Maghera
driver commented after the event “She’s some yoke, that’s the hardest I’ve had
to work in a car for a while, I don’t think I’ve ever driven a car like it”.
Enda Keenan was putting in competitive times early on, but his gearbox exploded
before he could complete a timed run.
Charlie Donnelly entertains the large crowd in Maurice Moffets Starlet.
Class winners for the
event included Mickey Conlon winning Class 1 in his Rallycross Mini, Shane
McGirr won Class 2 in his Suzuki engined Starlet. Stephen Lipsett took his
106Gti to victory in Class 3, while Class 4 remains the domain of reigning
Autocross Champion Joseph Smith. Maurice Moffett showed both Charlie Donnelly
and Jim McKenna how a Starlet should be driven as he won Class 5 when Sam
ascended into the Overall Event lead.
The newly crowned
Pirelli International Tarmac Champion Eugene Donnelly and his brother Charlie,
who leads the National Rally Championship will take part in next Sunday’s
Autocross at Hut Cross. The event is being run by Monaghan Motor Club in aid of
Chris Rodgers who was paralysed from the waist down in an accident during the
2004 Monaghan Stages Rally. Chris is travelling to China for revolutionary treatment at a cost of
£50,000.
Clerk of the Course
for the event is twice National Rally Champion Niall Maguire and the Ballinode
man has called in some of Irelands best known Drivers to draw as much of a
crowd as possible. The Hut Cross venue is located off the first turn right on
the Cootehill to Ballybay road past Morris’s Garage.
Phillip White Tyres Ulster
Rally.
While victory in this
years Ulster Rally brought Eugene Donnelly and Paul Kiely their third
successive Tarmac title there was a few local crews competing on the stages
around Armagh. The Ulster Rally is one of the few rallies
nowadays to feature night stages on Friday evening and after these had been
completed Raymond Conlon and James O’Rielly from Clones were 5th
overall and first 2-wheel drive car in their Corolla twin cam. Further back in
15th overnight were Trevor Lancashire and Noel Hall from Drum in
their Pratt Construction Mk2 Escort leading class 7.
Saturday morning
brought rain and a jump start for Conlon and with it 1 minute road penalties
plummeting down the leaderboard, they eventually finished 12th. As
others fell by the wayside on the muddy stages Trevor Lancashire and Noel Hall
moved steadily through the field to finish 5th overall and 2nd
two-wheel drive car.
Charlie Donnelly Wins in Galway.
Charlie Donnelly / Paddy Toner Galway Summer Rally Winners.
Motorsport News by Gerry Buckley.
Charlie Donnelly
(Toyota Corolla WRC), co-driven by Paddy Toner, reclaimed the lead in the
Dunlop National Rally Championship with a hard earned victory in the Athenry
based Loughrea Plant Sales Galway Summer Rally, the eighth round of the series.
Pre-event Dunlop championship leader, Patrick Elliott (Subaru WRC) and his
co-driver, Paul Goodman retired on the very first stage. Michael
Barrable/Mickey Joe Morrissey (Ford Focus WRC) took a season’s best second
place – 31 seconds behind the winners and 28 seconds ahead of the Ford Focus
WRC of Aaron MacHale/Craig Parry. Gabriel Martin/Paddy Robinson (Mitsubishi)
won the Group N category and Maurice Moffett/Jason McKenna (Toyota Starlet) won
the two-wheel drive category.
There was plenty of drama on the opening stage, Coldwood, as Donnelly set the
pace to eke out a four second lead over NcNulty, who overshot a junction.
Barrable was a further three seconds behind and remarked that he had a few
anxious moments on what transpired to be a very slippery stage. Dunlop
Championship leader, Patrick Elliott bowed out with an electrical malady,
meanwhile, Group N leader, Alan Ring was the first casualty – he crashed his
Subaru within a mile of the stage start while a little further down the stage,
Ollie O’Reilly and Arthur Kieransrolled
their G3 Escort out of the rally after getting caught out on loose gravel.
Meanwhile, Noel Redmond slotted his Subaru into fourth followed by Martin
Doherty, who got a call from the reserve list. Sixth placed Aaron MacHale
admitted he was far too caution on the opening test. Out on S.S. 2, Donnelly
was again the pacesetter and when McNulty lost a minute and 15 seconds as he
hit the rear of his Subaru, Barrable moved into second – 17 seconds adrift of
the leader. ALMC winner Martin Doherty also moved up the order, he was third –
just four seconds behind Barrable and two ahead of MacHale.
Group N leader, Ian Barrett (Mitsubishi) took
the final top ten spot; he was six seconds in front of Gabriel Martin
(Mitsubishi) with Willie Fannin (Subaru) two seconds further behind and three
seconds ahead of Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) – all of whom ensured a close
contest.
On the repeat of the two stages, Tim McNulty set the quickest times and moved
up eight places to seventh. Rally leader, Donnelly maintained a steady pace and
extended his lead margin over second placed Barrable to 23 seconds while Aaron MacHale
was a similar distance behind in third. Sharing fourth were former Dunlop
champion, Niall Maguire and Martin Doherty, the latter overshooting on S.S. 4.
There was a change of lead in Group N with Gabriel Martin some 12 seconds ahead
of Fannin, who had no explanation why he lost time to the category leader.
Kevin Kelleher slotted his Mitsubishi into third. Ian Barrett was fourth in the
category; he lost the lead with a blown turbo on S.S. 4.
Donnelly lost power steering prior to the start of S.S. 5 when a bolt
connecting the unit to the chassis sheared. He lost vital seconds to his
rivals, however, he was fortunate that S.S. 6 was cancelled and he lost no
further time. The net result saw him share the lead with Barrable while MacHale
was 27 seconds behind in third. Redmond set his sights on catching the
Dubliner and had narrowed the deficit to four seconds. Tim McNulty, who was
fastest again, continued his move up the order, he was fifth from former Dunlop
champion, Niall Maguire. In Group N, Martin continued to lead but Fannin moved
a few seconds closer and brought the margin down to seven seconds.
Tim McNulty had suspension and clutch difficulties and withdrew his Pierce
backed Subaru S11 WRC at the final service. Donnelly blasted his way through
the final two stages to take victory and set up a title decider with Elliott in
Clare in a few weeks time. Barrable was quite content with second and remarked
that it was very satisfying to find the pace he showed a few years ago. A
change to a harder compound tyre paid dividends for MacHale, who went clear of Redmond to secure third. Elsewhere,
Gabriel Martin took his first Group N win in a round of the Dunlop series; he
finished twelve seconds ahead of Willie Fannin. Maurice Moffett came out best
in a tiebreak for two wheel drive honors while Paddy Boyle and Marty Sherlock
had a faultless run to Class 13 victory recording their first finish of 2006
